We have some screenshots and a short manual on the next web-pages, showing duotones. Your darkroom trick : solarization is possible by using the tritone mode as well, positive and negative. And with full control over what to achieve!
But Duotone has a lot more possibilities, it can help scientist to enhance small differences in images, see our micrograph enhanced with Duotone.

Tritone let you even make a choice from four colors. Both Duotone and Tritone allow the strangest color-combinations: what if the gray values of your photograph change from red via green to blue? Try for yourself

Oh yes, you also can produce most, - if not all - the effects in photoshop(©), but photoshop is very expensive, it will take a month or two to figure out how all the options work, and even then, producing these effects is not easy and quick. Here we have a program with a user-friendly interface, producing the result at the click of the mouse.

The interface is the startup screen and looks like the picture below, click to enlarge. To use it in the program is easy, drag and drop your photograph, or open by the file-menu's open command.

A small warning: the images produced by Duotone are made by converting internally your colored picture to grayscale and then to RGB color-picture again. The program does not directly results in a conventional tritone image intended for printing with a print-press with three named color-inks only.
